It starts well, idles better than my other saws, and the smaller kerf and high chain speed make for very fast cutting, even with hardwoods.

I have many hours behind this saw, and I just ordered 5th and 6th chains (the others have been filed away). The only problems that are hardly worth mentioning are:
-The anti vibration system takes away some of the 'feel" of what you are cutting.
-My gas cap is getting tighter with each passing year. It seals fine, but its just hard to twist in and out now.
-It has a big engine which takes longer to reach operating temperature for usable power. (To be expected)

I've used this combo now for a couple of weeks, repairing a small aluminum airplane. I've used the drill mostly, the driver only a couple of times. It replaces a 10-year old 9.6v DeWalt drill.

The Makita is a good but not perfect drill. A few small gripes:

1. The 1.5amp-hour Li-Ion battery lasts for maybe 30 mins of use. So, if you're actively using it, you'll be swapping/recharging batteries throughout the day. Since it does recharge in 15 mins that not a problem for me, but maybe someday I'll get the 3.0 amp-hour battery.

2. Working upside down under the airplane wing, the cooling air blows through it at just the right angle to blow in your face along with aluminum cutting chips, unless you swivel the body to a slightly awkward angle. Yeah, that's an unusual use, but that's what I used it for these couple of weeks.

3. The LED light is a nice idea, but unfortunately the drill chuck casts a shadow on the drill point. Oh well.

4. I wish the driver had a clutch or some way reducing its tightening force...I don't want to torque much with an Al aircraft. But it will be handy for removing screws and bolts.

Others I know who own ths tool think it does a great job on grout and tile work. This blade is most usefull for some cuts, especially if the straighter blades won't reach the job properly. I have several of each in my tool kit and use what is most appropriate.

My girlfriend suggested I take out the workbench, and use door hinges to fold the workbench against the wall. The base on the Bosch was the big selling point here, and the fact that while it's not a cabinet saw, it still makes pretty darn accurate cuts. The fence is sturdy, the top is flat, the motor has plenty of power for anything up to about 2". Portable saws aren't going to slice through 3" of rock maple, so no complaints there.

I've had the same blade on for six months now, and it's still making remarkably clean cuts; I can't figure out how someone reported back theirs was dull inside of a week, maybe they got a dud? I'll replace it when it's not making glue-ready cuts, but for now, it's all good.

The only, tiny weakness here? If you use the miter gauge for anything requiring accuracy, you're going to need to replace it as soon as you can afford to. It wobbles left and right in the slot, which means that two cuts with the miter set to 45 degrees might add up to 85 or 95 degrees, but rarely average out to a perfect 90. I built a miter sled to fix the problem; $10 of MDF, scrap maple for runners, and a few screws. A buddy of mine swears by the Incra miters, but those are $100+.

The zero-clearance insert (also sold on Amazon) isn't bad, but if you press downward too much with a piece of wood, the insert bends down, and the cut will be at a slight angle. Not a sturdy piece of plastic. When I pick it up, I have to suppress a Neanderthal-esque grunt. I feel sorry for whatever I plan to use it on. I may even pause for a few moments of silence before commencing to tear it apart. Seriously. The FatMax is that good at destroying things.

The heft is amazingly well-balanced and optimized for smashing things. The hammer and claw is great for ripping things apart especially drywall, wood, and even sheet metal shelving. The pry bar is great for jamming into tighter squeezes. During our last renovation, my first job with this was to make more things fit into our dumpster by making big things into little things. I cannot express how well suited FatMax is for such tasks. In fact, I have to admit I had a little too much fun - a dangerous part of wanton destruction is the impact vibration damage to your limbs. FatMax does a good job of minimizing it for anything soft but try not to get carried away with metal and rock. A few more words of caution: wear protective gloves (especially around the fingers and knuckles if you plan to get carried away) and eye protection (things will be splattering).

On a bit of a side note, I notice that others have commented the usefulness of FatMax for zombies. As much as I love this item, I have to disagree. The FatMax is good for a strong first swing but then horrible for defending against nasty zombie bites. Or for a quick followup blow. Or a quick blow to another zombie since they do tend to congregate. Absolutely love the tools!! The shipping problems also appear to be fixed, mine was shipped placed inside of a stronger exterior box with everything intact. I did find that if I packed the radio in the bag as well things fit snugly and didn't get banged around too much. Ok, the saw blades, they cut fine, no complaints on them, although I have nothing to compare them to. So, that means the rest of this review is on the packaging. The storage box is nice although it should be longer to fit the long blades which you will eventually buy. Now on to the rant: two of the three large decals on the case I received almost required the saw to remove. They were nearly impossible to remove- even using a hair dryer they still came off in pieces- and then it took several applications of paint thinner with paper towels to remove the adhesive on the case. I agree with others that the wide jaws attachment should not be an option, rather it should be included with the basic tool.

I ordered my clamp by itself and was unhappy with its performance. I went back on-line and then saw the optional wide jaws attachment. I bought it, attached it to the clamp, and now I am happy with the tool.

So if you are considering the purchase of the clamp, figure in the additional cost of the wide jaws before you decide on whether the product has value for you.
