Shark 10-2204 Dowel/Dovetail/Detail Saw Get it now!

I initially bought this saw because it's advertised as being able to cut dowels or plugs flush with a surrounding surface. I tried this a few times, and was fairly disappointed - it cut easily enough, but scratched the surrounding surface badly! After more research, I learned that a true flush-cut saw does not have any "set" on the teeth (i.e. the teeth aren't bent out from the saw plate. Some set is important to prevent the saw plate from binding in deeper cuts, but it means that the teeth will scratch the surrounding surface if it's used as a flush cut saw).
I eventually bought a true flush cut saw from a popular Canadian woodworking/gardening retailer, and was amazed at how much difference that made. The teeth are truly flush with the saw plate, which means they won't scratch your workpiece when you flush cut a dowel or plug.
Not so on this Shark saw - the teeth do have set and will scratch your workpiece if used for flush cutting. Some significant time spent with a sharpening stone could theoretically remove this set, but the impulse-hardened teeth would make this more difficult, and it would be hard (for me at least) to justify that time and trouble when ready-to-use flush cut saws are available for only a few dollars more.

Second, this saw is advertised as "Ideal for dovetails..." While it may be strictly FUNCTIONAL for dovetails, it's far from ideal. The vast majority of saw cuts made when creating a dovetail are effectively rip cuts, which means you're cutting along or parallel to the grain of the wood. This type of cut is fastest and most efficient when done using a saw with rip style teeth. This Shark saw has teeth shaped for CROSSCUTS (perpendicular to the wood grain), so it's optimized for slicing through wood fibers in this orientation. It will still make rip cuts, but these cuts will be slower and potentially harder to control than they would be with a rip-specific saw. In other words, you could use this saw for an occasional dovetail, but again, it's definitely not "ideal".

The third descriptor in Amazon's title is "detail" saw. Finally an accurate description of an appropriate use for this saw! It does a fine job with small crosscuts and general trimming tasks, and leaves a fairly smooth surface. Nicer saws are available for these general small crosscutting tasks, but this is about as good as it gets for the price.

In summary: If this had been called a "Detail/fine crosscut saw", I would have given it a much higher rating. However, it's NOT a flush cutting or dovetail saw, and shouldn't be advertised as such. If you're looking for good saws for these specific tasks, look elsewhere.Get more detail about Shark 10-2204 Dowel/Dovetail/Detail Saw.

Milescraft 1213 Complete Door Mortising Kit Order Now

I disagree with other reviewers who trashed this product. I am a contractor and I have owned a number of templates and jigs over the years.

I bought this one because I was impressed with the variety of templates included. For the price, I wasn't expecting much, but I was pleasantly surprised. I threw away the little nails that came with it and used #6 screws to secure the frame. From that point, it worked great. Instead of a large router, I just used my cordless laminate trimmer - very light and maneuverable.

I love the tool. I gave it a 4 rather than 5 only because I thought the materials used could be better. Actually, I would rate it a 4.7 if I could.Get more detail about Milescraft 1213 Complete Door Mortising Kit.

Steelex D1069 1200 Grit Japanese Waterstone Decide Now

This is very fine wet stone. Requires care in use. If you are a person who just wants to sharpen your knife in 2 seconds this product is not for you. For one this it is recommended that the stone is placed constantly in water, or at the very least for 15 minutes before every use. You cannot use oil on this stone because it will ruin the stone (thus the name). On the positive side it sharpens the knife very finely and I have very good experince with it thus far.Get more detail about Steelex D1069 1200 Grit Japanese Waterstone.

Kreg P-OAK Oak Plugs for Pockets, 50-Pack

These plugs arrived scattered throughout the box the Kreg jig was shipped in. Their container had been crushed before it was shipped. Many of the plugs were split and the ones that were not split were too rough to use. I put these plugs where they should have been from the beginning; in the landfill. I like the Kreg jig OK but these plugs were totally unusable. I went to Home Depot and purchased a box of plugs made by a different manufacturer. They are in excellent shape and very usable. I have made many purchases from Amazon over the years with great results almost every time. This item though was literally garbage. I suspect the reader has gathered by now that I do not recommend these plugs.Get more detail about Kreg P-OAK Oak Plugs for Pockets, 50-Pack.

Purchase Bosch 1594K 6.5 Amp 3-1/4-Inch Planer Kit

This is not a 6" jointer but it works well as a hand planer.

I was pleased to see that the cord is extra long compared to most hand power tools.

I have not changed the blades yet but they appear to be easy to change without any need for alignment tools as long as you use the razor blade type.

I have done both edging and face planing. Face planing is easier, but edging is doable.

The plastic carrier is usable but the planer and fence must be positioned just right for the lid to close. It would have been nice if they had included a storage area for extra blades.Get more detail about Bosch 1594K 6.5 Amp 3-1/4-Inch Planer Kit.

Low Price Peltor H9A Optime 98 Over-the-Head Earmuffs

I've owned these earmuffs for several weeks now, and I can say without reservation that they're the best I've used. The only other muffs I own are very cheap imported ones, but I've tried several others including the heavier-duty Peltor model. My primary use is with power tools in my wood shop. I think these H9A earmuffs strike a great balance of great sound deadening on one hand, and relatively light weight and low profile on the other. They do an excellent job of blocking annoying/painful noise levels, while still allowing me to hear a LITTLE bit of ambient noise (i.e. I can still tell if a power tool motor is doing something strange). I'd say they block noise at least as well as the better plugs I've used.
These muffs seal around my ears much better than my cheapo muffs, almost to the point of popping my ears if I yank them straight out too suddenly. However, this is due to the sealing action of soft, flexible pad, and not that the head band squeezes too tightly. The plastic on the outside of the ear cup is thick and durable (I sort of knocked these earmuffs off a high shelf onto a concrete floor, and they weren't cracked or damaged in any way), but they're not as heavy or obtrusive as the bigger Peltor muffs (which stick out farther from your head).
The padded top band is also a nice improvement over the hard plastic of the cheap "industrial" muffs I own.
I typically wear my earmuffs over safety glasses and a dust mask, neither of which affects the fit of these muffs. I would expect the arms of the glasses to interfere with the fit, but they still seal very well. I can force the muffs to lift up a bit if I turn my head and flex my neck just so, and at that point I notice a slight increase in transmitted noise. However, the presence of safety glasses does not cause this - the muffs remain comfortably sealed around my ears.Get more detail about Peltor H9A Optime 98 Over-the-Head Earmuffs.
