First things first: when you buy an edged tool, you WILL have to hone the blade. Planes WILL need to be tuned. This one didn't need to be honed or tuned much, and was in working shape in about 20 minutes, about the average, in my experience, for decent woodworking tools. After that, it worked like a charm. The rounded, enameled handles are a little slick if your hands get sweaty, but this is a pretty minor flaw. The blade is excellent and holds its edge through several hours of shaping white oak staves, and the 2-screw blade leveling system, though it has more play in it than I usually like, is rock solid once you get it set. I initially bought this saw because it's advertised as being able to cut dowels or plugs flush with a surrounding surface. I tried this a few times, and was fairly disappointed - it cut easily enough, but scratched the surrounding surface badly! After more research, I learned that a true flush-cut saw does not have any "set" on the teeth (i.e. the teeth aren't bent out from the saw plate. Some set is important to prevent the saw plate from binding in deeper cuts, but it means that the teeth will scratch the surrounding surface if it's used as a flush cut saw).
I eventually bought a true flush cut saw from a popular Canadian woodworking/gardening retailer, and was amazed at how much difference that made. The teeth are truly flush with the saw plate, which means they won't scratch your workpiece when you flush cut a dowel or plug.
Not so on this Shark saw - the teeth do have set and will scratch your workpiece if used for flush cutting. Some significant time spent with a sharpening stone could theoretically remove this set, but the impulse-hardened teeth would make this more difficult, and it would be hard (for me at least) to justify that time and trouble when ready-to-use flush cut saws are available for only a few dollars more.

Second, this saw is advertised as "Ideal for dovetails..." While it may be strictly FUNCTIONAL for dovetails, it's far from ideal. The vast majority of saw cuts made when creating a dovetail are effectively rip cuts, which means you're cutting along or parallel to the grain of the wood. This type of cut is fastest and most efficient when done using a saw with rip style teeth. This Shark saw has teeth shaped for CROSSCUTS (perpendicular to the wood grain), so it's optimized for slicing through wood fibers in this orientation. It will still make rip cuts, but these cuts will be slower and potentially harder to control than they would be with a rip-specific saw. In other words, you could use this saw for an occasional dovetail, but again, it's definitely not "ideal".

The third descriptor in Amazon's title is "detail" saw. Finally an accurate description of an appropriate use for this saw! It does a fine job with small crosscuts and general trimming tasks, and leaves a fairly smooth surface. Nicer saws are available for these general small crosscutting tasks, but this is about as good as it gets for the price.

In summary: If this had been called a "Detail/fine crosscut saw", I would have given it a much higher rating. However, it's NOT a flush cutting or dovetail saw, and shouldn't be advertised as such. There's not much to judge on a device like this. It's aluminum, so it shouldn't rust. The markings are clear and legible. It is indeed square (90 degree angle).

But I'm giving it 3 stars due to the obnoxious label on it. It's 3" long and runs edge to edge on the long side. When I tried to peel it off, I only got a little bit of label. I tried a few more times with the same result. The paper is peeling off in tiny pieces, and the adhesive is still stuck to the square.

you have been reading my reviews lately, you know I have reviewed drill bits. Alot of drill bits in fact.Spadebits, auger bits, hole saw bits, masonary bits and finally twist bits. These are the standard drill bits most of us are familiar with and use for drilling in metals, woods and plastics. Good bits are vital to a drills ability to do its thing. I have reviewed many(see other reviews) and these bits had some problems.

I got 2 sets of these bits on clearance (what else is new)
This set includes two 1/16-inch split point bits; 1 each split point bits from 5/64- to 7/64-inch-by-64ths; 2 1/8-inch split point bits; 1 each Pilot Point bit: 9/64, 5/32, 3/16, 7/32, 1/4, 5/16; and 3/8-inch Pilot Point bits in a tough yellow plastic case.

I like The "no-spin" shank used on bits sizes 3/16-inch and over, as it eliminated the anoyance of bits spining in the chuck instead of drilling.

In use, I found these bits to be a bit too aggressive due to the pilot point grabbing violently. If my workpiece hadn't been clamped down, the results may have been disasterous. I would recomend these only for rough work where tearout and overall finish didnt matter. These bits simply rip into the workpiece with a little to much zest for my taste. You could damage some expensive wood with these bits performing like this. They have all the smoothness of a spade bit.

At 16 dollars and change from amazon, they are reasonable cheap. Good quality, sure. But way too aggresive for my liking!

You should be thrilled that these batteries work w/ your old tool at all. Its a testiment to DeWalt's support of their older products that these new batteries attach and continue to power older tools. It may not look perfect, but hey at least DeWalt isn't making you run out and buy a whole new set of tools. DeWalt stands by their product and their customers.

In short, these batteries are awesome. If you pick up a DeWalt lithium tool kit, the tool will have the Nano base and the battery fit will be seamless. If you have a older tool, the battery will fit and power the tool but it will be smaller than the base on the tool.

Not everybody has enough cash to keep buying new tools every time a new technology comes out. Be happy you can run your old stuff on the new batteries and take comfort that the new kits fit as expected.

I have always used the cheap rubberband style face masks when I needed filtration from my woodworking endeavors and until recently thought that was enough. I watched a good little video from Marc Spagnolo ([...]) on the importance of properly stopping the dust from entering your lungs and was convinced I needed to upgrade. With his recommendations I went to the local Blue home improvement store and tried on both the 7500 series and 6500 series of mask. There is no comparision to how much more comfortable the 7500 series are. This particular item won't come with and cartidges or filters so you'll have to go down to the local Blue home store and pick them up or order them with your purchase of the mask. Also the Blue store only had medium and I felt they were a little small(although a proper fit was obtained with the medium). I ordered the large and am happy I did. Additionally the downfiring exhaust is awsome. I didn't once get a safety glass fog up.

As a side note If you don't order the cartidges with your purchase of the mask I recommend going 1 of two different ways.
1. Either purchase the standard organic filter (3M R6022 Organic Vapor Cartridge/Filter) which will cover most of your household needs and then additionally purchase the filter adaptor(3M #502 RESPIRATOR FILTER ADAPTER 2/PKG) and P100 filters (3M R-2091 Particulate Filter P100, 4-Pack). The standard particulate filter that comes with the organic filter is only rated to P95. For woodworking it's highly recommended that you go with a p100 filter better safe I always say!

2. Your other option is to purchase the organic vapor/acid gas/p100 filter (P100 / Organic Vapor / Acid Gas, 3M 6000 Series Cartridges, Pink/Yellow (2 Per Package)) and get total coverage for anything you'll ever expereince in the household environment.

I bought one of these because I was looking for a detail sander. But since I make sawdust almost every weekend, I was looking for something that was going to last. I had looked around at a lot of other detail sanders and they all struck me as cheap flimsy things designed for to be used on one or two projects then forgotten or thrown away. I also considered a couple of the multi-function tools for their utility but sanding was more important to me since that was what I would primarily be using it for. Ultimately I ruled out the multi-function tools since they were either too light duty in design or much more expensive. Additionally, this sander is an orbital while those only oscillate meaning you're less likely to be left with sander marks. When I bought it, I opted not to get the dust collection attachment due to poor reviews from other prior purchasers.

On first use it became clear that this sander may be small in size but it is a heavy duty performer. It makes sawdust and is quick about it. I knew right away that I was going to have to find an answer to the dust collection issue and soon or my lungs were going to be full of termites dining on the wood inside. It sands aggressively but leaves a fine finish with 200 or higher grit paper. In the end, I purchased a Ridgid universal dust collection adapter that fit well with the tool and my shop vac. WIth the vac attached, dust collection is as good as any other sander I have. I honestly haven't used the little fingers other than to play with them and I'll likely continue to sand profiles by hand but the ability to reach in tight spaces might come in handy if you're refinishing. Makita and others make these 1/2 size batteries and the problem is that they last less than half as long as a full size and provide a lot less power to the drill at anywhere near full power. Do something tough like cutting holes in wood or driving long deck screws and the battery charge disappears almost before you can blink. For light duty operations the Makita kits with the 1/2 size batteries are barely adequate but may be all that the average homeowner needs for small projects. In these same situations though a 3/8" cord drill is going to provide much better performance. For heavy duty jobs a full size battery can make a big difference and I would not recommend replacing half-size batteries with more 1/2 size batteries. Wiser to buy a single full size battery when it comes time to buy an additional battery.

I find that I can get many more holes by using modern big gullet hole cutters like the ones from Blue Boar but even here the full size batteries enable use of larger hole saws with the same drill motor.

Delta 40-620 3 Dozen Assorted Scroll Saw Blades Get it now!

Recently purchased a Jet Scroll saw at a local store that came with a few blades. This being my first attempt at scrollsawing, I followed the instructions to a tee but the blades broke anyway. I decided to purchase these Delta blades online largely in part because there will be 3 dozen blades to "practice" on. Well, I seemed to be getting more than what I bargained for: either I improved quickly at the craft or these Delta blades are very sturdy! I have worked on quite a lot of pieces and i have yet to break a single blade (really!). I am very satisfied with this purchase and am recommending it to would be buyers. Just wished they can come in larger quantities and with different teeth sets on Amazon.
